Annotation
The Hive Detectives chronicles the search by scientists to understand and find the cause of colony collapse disorder, which is mysteriously decimating honey bee hives all across the United States.

Review
Burn’s The Hive Detectives is a fascinating look at one of science’s most pressing mysteries, colony collapse disorder (CCD).  CCD is responsible for the disappearance of entire hives of honey bees.  Why is CCD a concern?  Because honey bees are responsible for pollinating our fruit and vegetable plants; without honey bees we will not have any crops.  Burns describes the work of several scientists as they study the possible causes of CCD, including disease, pests, and pesticides.  In the process readers learn about the different parts of the honey bee, as well as the behavior and social structure of the hive.  Burn’s interesting and readable narrative is made all the more fascinating by the inclusion of Harasimowicz’s full color photographs.
